Grassrivers in GTA 6 — Map Location and the Wetlands Region

Grassrivers is the wetland and swamp region of the State of Leonida, one of the six regions Rockstar has described. Its introduction is headed “Welcome to the Wetlands.”

It is the shortest of the six introductions and the most ominous. “The untamable jewel of Leonida’s crown. You never know what lies beneath the surface of this primordial expanse.” Then the invitation: “The gators may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves.”

“Weirder discoveries” is worth noticing. Rockstar has a long habit of hiding secrets and side stories in the most remote corners of its maps, and the line reads like a nod to that — though that is our reading, and Rockstar has not said what it refers to.

The name is the strongest clue

In 1947 the writer Marjory Stoneman Douglas published The Everglades: River of Grass, and “River of Grass” has been the Everglades’ nickname ever since. The book changed how people saw the wetland — not a stagnant swamp, but an extremely slow river feeding a whole region.

So a Florida-inspired game naming its wetland Grassrivers, and filling it with gators and mangroves, is a clear tribute. As with Vice City, it is a borrowing, not a copy.

Why a swamp region is a real design decision

Swamp is difficult open-world terrain: mud and a maze of waterways do not carry the fast road driving that GTA is built on. A wetland that gets its own name, its own introduction and its own screenshots probably offers something other than driving. That is our inference; Rockstar has not described the activities.

It also contrasts with the Leonida Keys: open water and islands there, enclosed freshwater and mangrove here. That two of six regions are defined by water says something about how much of GTA 6’s world is not city.

• Getting around. Boats, airboats, aircraft — nothing has been said.
• The “weirder discoveries.” Hidden missions, unusual wildlife or something else.
• Characters. None of the eight profiled characters is placed here.
