Preloading does not mean playing early. It lets the download finish before launch, so you can start as soon as the game unlocks.

The boxed edition contains a download code, not a disc. You still download the full game.

When does it unlock?

Only one time has been published: the US PlayStation Store listing shows November 19 at 05:00 UTC, which is midnight Eastern or 9:00 p.m. Pacific on November 18.

Unlock times are set per platform and region. For Xbox and for other regions, check the listing in your own store; a countdown made for another region may not apply to you.

How much space do you need?

Rockstar has not announced the install size, and the numbers circulating online are community estimates. Once preloads open, your console’s store shows the actual download size and the free space required, so use that figure. How long the download takes depends on that size and on your connection.

Launch-week checklist

1. Make sure your account region, platform and edition are the ones you want. The editions and price guide covers Standard versus Ultimate.
2. On November 12, start the preload and check the download size and free space your console shows.
3. Look up the unlock time on your own store’s listing.
4. Before launch day, check the release date guide in case anything has changed.
